A major recall has been announced by major chainsaw brand Positec (owner of brands Hyper Tough, Worx, and Portland), pulling nearly 49,000 electric‑corded chainsaws and pole saws due to a potentially serious safety fault.
What are the risks?
The recall follows findings that the main trigger switch on these tools can fail to disengage, allowing the saw to continue running even after the user releases the switch—a clear laceration hazard. Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries so far.
Brands and Models Affected
- Hyper Tough: 9‑amp, 14″ corded chainsaw (Walmart exclusive)
- Worx: 8‑amp, 14″ chainsaw (model WG305) and 8‑amp pole saw (model WG309)
- Portland: 9‑amp, 14″ chainsaw from Harbor Freight
These products were sold between September 2024 and March 2025, priced between US $50–120 (approx. £40–95), through both online and retail outlets in North America and Canada.
Does This Impact UK Shoppers?
- Brands sold locally?
- Worx is available in the UK via Amazon UK and independent retailers—some units may be part of the affected batch.
- Hyper Tough and Portland are not commonly sold in the UK; exposure is less likely.
- Is the fault universal?
- Yes. The fault is tied to the product design, not just regional versions—any imported unit could be flawed.
- What should UK owners do?
- Stop using these tools immediately if you own one from the affected brands/models.
- Contact the manufacturer’s European arm or UK-based retailer for recall guidance.
- If imported from the US or Canada, check serial numbers and return via the seller or contact Positec for a pre‑paid return for inspection or replacement
What should you do?
| What you own | What to do |
|---|---|
| Worx corded chainsaw/pole saw | Check serial number against recall info & contact retailer or Positec UK |
| Hyper Tough / Portland | Likely not UK‑sold—no immediate action unless imported |
| Any affected tool | Stop use immediately and arrange a return/replacement |
Despite no reported injuries, the danger is real due to the saw’s risk of running uncontrolled. If you bought a corded Worx chainsaw or pole saw since September 2024, it’s worth verifying serial numbers and safety status. EU and UK authorities haven’t yet issued a formal recall here, but the manufacturer’s global recall applies equally. Prioritise safety and get it checked.
You can check the UK Government for product recalls here and if in doubt always check with the manufacturer or seller.
