At the 2025 RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Monty Don, renowned for his role on BBC’s Gardeners’ World, unveiled his inaugural show garden—a delightful, dog-centric haven inspired by his golden retriever, Ned. Collaborating with horticulturist Jamie Butterworth, Don crafted a space that celebrates the deep bond between humans and their canine companions, marking a significant departure from Chelsea’s traditionally message-driven exhibits.
A Garden Tailored for Tails
Central to the design is a neatly mown lawn, ideal for dogs to sprawl, roll, and play. This lawn transitions into longer grass adorned with ornamental spring bulbs, forming a “tameflower” meadow that balances aesthetics with canine enjoyment. A large tree provides ample shade, while brick paths—reminiscent of Don’s own Longmeadow garden—guide visitors through the space. These paths are inscribed with the names of beloved dogs, including Ned and Queen Camilla’s Jack Russell Terriers, Beth and Bluebell, adding a personal touch to the experience.

Educational and Sensory Elements
Beyond its playful aspects, the garden features an area dedicated to educating visitors about plants that are toxic to dogs, promoting safer gardening practices. A summerhouse within the garden plays a specially curated dog-themed playlist, enhancing the sensory experience for both humans and their furry friends.
A Lasting Legacy
After the show, the garden will find a permanent home at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, offering a serene environment for rescue animals and the dedicated staff and volunteers who care for them.
Monty Don’s dog-friendly garden not only showcases innovative design but also underscores the joy and companionship that dogs bring to our lives, encouraging gardeners to create spaces that are both beautiful and accommodating to all members of the family.
