Monty Don’s Longmeadow garden in Herefordshire has been overwhelmed by severe flooding, with the renowned TV gardener noting that he has never seen water levels this high in over three decades.
The Gardeners’ World presenter, who frequently films segments of the beloved BBC programme from his home garden, took to Instagram to share a series of photos and videos. These posts revealed the scale of the inundation, with much of Longmeadow submerged after days of heavy rainfall across Herefordshire.
Reflecting on the situation, Monty Don posted: “Never seen it so high in the garden in 35 years.” His followers quickly responded, with many expressing sympathy and concern. One wrote: “I’m so sorry you have had this issue. Hopefully all your plants will recover.” Another echoed the sentiment, adding, “Herefordshire has been hit badly the last couple of days.”
Despite the damage, Don remained optimistic, referring to the floodwaters as “beautiful” in one post. He even shared a lighthearted video of his dog enjoying a swim amidst the waterlogged landscape. “At least the sun was shining,” he remarked.
The flooding in Herefordshire has caused widespread disruption throughout the region, with numerous roads and schools forced to close due to the heavy rainfall.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time Monty Don has faced such conditions at Longmeadow. In a blog post from January, he recounted similar challenges after prolonged rainfall. “It has barely stopped raining for the past three months,” he wrote at the time, adding that many fields and sections of his garden were underwater. He described the ongoing struggle with wet weather, slippery paths, and the frustration of being unable to carry out gardening work without creating a “terrible mess.”
Don also acknowledged the broader implications of climate change, observing that British winters are becoming increasingly wet, warm, and extreme. “Climate change now means that instead of being something we are observing and monitoring with a detached, almost academic interest, it is really affecting our day-to-day domestic lives,” he wrote.
